Ladies and Gentlemen:
INTRODUCTION
It is with gratitude to Almighty God and a heart full of joy that I warmly welcome
all of you to Evan Enwerem University, Owerri on the occasion of the matriculation
ceremony of the 2009/2010 academic session. To the matriculating students I say
welcome to this citadel of learning as I share in your sense of accomplishment thus
far, hence history is being made today in your march towards the materialization
of your life ambition of acquiring a university education.
THE UNIVERSITY
Evan Enwerem University, formally called Imo State University has come a long way.
Born and bathed in Etiti, Campus. You are advised to feel free to use the various
facilities in a clean and green manner that will not jeopardize their use by future
generations. Sporting facilities are available in the campus for your sporting events.
In this connection, it may interest you to know that your university in the recently
concluded Nigerian Universities Games won the coveted gold medal for the football
event and therefore is the current champion and the first state university to achieve
this feat.
STAFF
Our academic programmes are tailored towards providing qualitative education for
high level manpower development. To this end, we have engaged erudite, competent,
dedicated, motivated and world class staff. They have passed this road long before
now. They have garmered a huge amount of expertise and experience. You are advised
to draw from their fountain of knowledge and experience and thereby excel in your
chosen areas.
DISCIPLINE
The university has zero tolerance for secret cult activities, sorting, indecent
dressing, examination malpractice, impersonation and all forms of lawlessness. Note
that the punishment for wanton violation of rules and regulations is outright expulsion
in addition to possible criminal proceedings against perpetrators. Thus, the appropriate
punishment will be meted out to all violators of the university rules without fear
or favour. The university has a code of conduct for staff and students. The university
uses the code of conduct for both quality control and for ensuring discipline. Feel
free to report to ombudsman of the university any harassment, imposed levy or extortion
of any type whether by a staff or a fellow student. Note that the university has
abolished all direct sales of books and handouts by lectures or their agents. Books
and materials are sold at the university bookshop to those willing and able to buy.
For this purpose, you must not allow any staff to use you as an agent to avoid being
made an escape goat. You must therefore remain focused and be guided by your student’s
handbook and other legitimate directives from the university authorities.
FEES
In our avowed commitment to serve you better, we have unified all payments and thereby
obviated the difficulty faced by students in massing up at designated banks at the
bursary, followed by the faculty and finally at the department by way of payment
of fees. Effectively, the university has embarked on a policy of e-payment that
captures all relevant fees through a single click. Students and their parents are
advised to pay relevant fees online and access relevant information equally online.
All other forms of payments including charges not backed by receipts are absolutely
prohibited. It should be emphasized that non-payment of relevant fees disqualifies
you from enjoying the services provided by the university. Thus payments of all
approved fees are a condition precedent for your registration and for you to be
admitted into classes for lectures and examination.
CONCLUSION
Your admission into this university is based on merit, not only in terms of your
brilliant performance at the JAMB examinations but also on your POST-UME screening
here in Evan Enwerem University. Our preliminary checks on both your JAMB scores
and your POST-UME screening records have so far placed you on good standing. Those
of you who are however subsequently found to have falsified their JAMB scores or
their POST-UME screening scores will be denied admission into this university and
have their names published widely, not only to demonstrate that our admission mechanism
cannot be beaten, but also to discourage future offenders. These verification exercise
are on-going and we assure you that only the clearly qualified candidates will eventually
graduate from Evan Enwerem University, hence your admission is provisional.
It is important to note that you are all here for the
development in both your character
and learning. The award of the university degree to you will be contingent upon
your satisfying the minimum university requirements based on the two generic attributes
of character and learning. It is therefore incumbent upon you to put in your best
since you may not have a second chance to make the maximum use of this unique opportunity
of being IMO STARS!
Let me emphasize that the journey towards your graduation starts now. This implies
that the foundation for your grade point average, whether for first class, second
class upper, second class lower, third class, pass or failure starts now and eventually
determines your qualification to pursue postgraduate studies thereafter. To this
end, you need to strive to ensure that you pass every course registered; hence every
course counts in determining your academic performance and must be passed before
you can graduate.
You need to know the
Dean of your Faculty; identify your head of department, relate
well with your staff adviser, faculty officers and indeed all staff of the university.
They are of critical relevance to you in the first few weeks of your stay in the
university as you find your way through the maze of our organizational arrangements,
rules and regulations. All of them are here for your sake and you must listen to
them if you must succeed, provided however that you do not allow yourself to be
misled into any act of misconduct or illegality.
FORMAL ADMISSION
As a statutory ceremony in the university system that marks the formal admission
of selected applicants as bona fide students, this matriculation ceremony marks
the commencement of your academic sojourn here. It is therefore my sacred duty and
responsibility to formally admit you as bona fide students of the Evan Enwerem University,
Imo State. Congratulations and may you have an academically rewarding stay in the
university.
